In 2020, during the Covid pandemic, the Auburn School District’s Child Nutrition Services took advantage of the break to create all new digital displays for the food service hallways. Overhead 36×48 inch monitors transition between slides of the daily special, weekly menu, and staff and meal images. While still distributing lunches to absent students, work proceeded on taking professional photos and designing displays tailored specifically to each age group’s interests and abilities; elementary, middle and high schools.
Betty Hageman consulted with the District’s Coordinator and Dietition to arrange photography and created design layouts that were appealing to students, staff and visiting parents alike. Design elements took into account different age’s reading abilities, preferred colors and foods, social activities and level of sophistication. For instance, grade school slides needed to be very simple and repetitive with soft colors; middle school ages prefer greens and blues and are quick to spot fake or unrealistic messages; while high school students prefer darker colors and want respect and to be treated as adults.
